New Year’s Resolutions: 2025 Edition for Marketers
Ah, the New Year: that magical time when we arm ourselves with glittery planning apps and fresh calendars. As marketers, we’re no strangers to setting ambitious goals—we literally do it for a living. But this year, let’s aim for resolutions that don’t just sound good in a strategy meeting but also make our lives (and campaigns) better. Here are a few marketer-specific New Year’s resolutions that may up your game in 2025.
1. I Will Not Chase Every Shiny New Platform
Yes, TikTok is still ruling the world, but does your B2B accounting software really need a dance challenge? And no, your bakery’s sourdough doesn’t need a Threads strategy (yet). In 2025, let’s promise to evaluate new platforms with a discerning eye and only invest time where it counts. Just because it’s shiny doesn’t mean it’s gold—it could just be glitter that’ll clog up your analytics dashboard.
2. I Will Actually Read the Marketing Reports
You know, the ones: the gorgeous PDFs and dashboards you spent hours creating but haven’t opened since Q1 of last year. This year, resolve to read those metrics, understand what’s working, and pivot accordingly. Bonus resolution: Stop pretending “vanity metrics” don’t exist. Yes, we love likes and shares, but if your revenue is flatlining, maybe it’s time to dig deeper.
3. I Will Stop Overusing Buzzwords
We’re all guilty of it: “synergy,” “low-hanging fruit,” “disruption,” and everyone’s least favorite, “circle back.” This year, let’s resolve to communicate like actual humans. The next time someone says “leverage,” just hand them a thesaurus. (And while we’re at it, can we retire the phrase “think outside the box”? The box is gone. It’s been gone for years. Move on.)
4. I Will Respect My Email Subscribers
Dear marketer, your subscribers don’t need three emails a day reminding them about your flash sale. And if you’re still starting emails with “Dear [First Name],” please, for the love of all that is automated, fix your mail merge settings. In 2025, let’s focus on personalization that doesn’t feel creepy and frequency that doesn’t feel spammy. Your unsubscribe rates will thank you.
5. I Will Use AI Wisely
AI is amazing, but let’s not make us lazy. This year, vow to use AI tools for good—like automating mundane tasks or generating ideas—not evil (looking at you, chatbot making fake typing noises). Remember, no robot can replace your creativity or your ability to tell a brand’s unique story.
6. I Will Learn to Say No
No, your team cannot execute a viral campaign with zero budget and two interns. No, you cannot “just make the logo bigger” without crying inside. And no, Karen, you cannot have a social media post go live in five minutes “just because.” Boundaries are your best friend in 2025. Practice saying “no” with a smile and watch your sanity (and results) skyrocket.
7. I Will Take My Own Medicine
So many marketing agencies tell clients to be consistent, create engaging content, and measure results—but they're slow to update their own marketing. This year, treat your brand like it’s a client. After all, if you can’t market yourself, why should anyone else trust you to market for them?
Here’s to a successful (and slightly less stressful) year ahead. And if you break a resolution or two, don’t sweat it—there’s always 2026. Cheers to you, fellow marketer. Now, get back to work. Your Q1 campaign isn’t going to plan itself.
